The Sad Soul Who Hated His Birthday

A love story so intense it feels unreal

The afternoon sun filters through the blinds as I lie sprawled out on my bare mattress with my sweaty torso sticking to its rough fabric.

My bedsheets had come undone from my mattress during my restless sleep and sat next to me crumpled in a ball.

Bored with nothing to do, I get lost in the texture of my blank white popcorn ceiling.

God, I hate my birthday.

Bing Bing

I glance down at my phone and see a paragraph-long text from my mom.

I don’t even bother to read it, probably the same phony bullshit she sends every year.

Bing Bing.

Another.

No way it’s my mom twice.

I check my phone.

It’s her again.

A short, but direct command, “Come to the kitchen.”

I groan.

Feeling the pressure to not torture my mother, I oblige, hop out of my bed, and slog my way up the stairs.

In unison, a few voices halfheartedly shriek, “Happy birthday!”

My mom, my sister, and my older brother stand around a melting Baskin-Robbins log cake with those stupid little cone hats on their head.

Not a single friend of mine felt guilty enough to show up to join the festivities.

I wouldn’t have come either.

And, I don’t really have any friends.

I struggle to sport a fake smile as I fight my urge to flee, and suffer through the celebration.

I just want it to be over.

After running through the obligatory song, blowing out candles, and eating a slice of cake, I make the lame excuse of needing fresh air, and head down to the water, the only place I can be alone.

Fortunately, my brother and his best friend have a double date, and my younger sister is headed to a sleepover.

I won’t even be missed.

Striding down the steep decline, I hike into the unkempt forested section, before trudging down yet another mounted…
