I am Breathing Life into History

How to use the Art of Poetry to make history interesting

I have always enjoyed history, historical facts, and information. The subject has always fascinated me, perhaps it was largely due to the fact, that I loved watching the Indiana Jones movies. However, my fascination with history goes further back and to one history teacher who enjoyed teaching us the subject.

Professor Mitra was the man who taught us history in school. He was a very intelligent man and he could narrate every event in history as if it had all happened just yesterday. This great teacher could breathe life into such a dry and ancient subject. He would draw detailed maps, diagrams of the battles fought on the blackboard, charts with the succession of kings, the paths taken by invaders, and the lives of all those victors, kings, and tyrants as if they were living people today.

Professor Mitra’s explanations made all of us in the classroom, sit up in excitement. We all wanted to know the next mission of the tyrant Emperor and the repercussions, his invasions would have on the historical world, as well as the aftermath of those battles in our present age. Though this wise Teacher has now gone, his memory lives in our minds. Here was one man who could make history so exciting and we all wanted to know more about those dark and dangerous times.

A few years ago, I was inspired to try my hand at making a historical poem. But, after I had noted down a few facts, I got discouraged and put them away. Recently, I got down to write a historical poem, on the “History of London.” I got all my facts and then I thought to myself, I needed to make the piece interesting. It was not long before I wrote another poem on Robin Hood and published it on Medium.
