Cybersecurity at the nexus of global strategic risk

Notable is the emphasis on information security. As the ‘contested commons’ of Cyberspace, Aquaspace, Geospace and Space (CAGS) become increasingly contentious, the technology and governance frameworks in place to protect nations’ interests are more and more reliant on instantaneous transfer of trustable data. Quantum science is on the precipice of creating computing power that renders inert any data encryption performed by legacy computer systems, providing the winners of the quantum race the ability to manipulate communications assumed to be secure with disinformation and dangerous misinformation.

With the integrity of data transmission at risk, the ability to maintain a level playing field on the planet, in its atmosphere, in orbit and beyond, loses all predictability. Coupled with advancements in artificial intelligence and other dual-use technologies, compromised information stored on computer systems will continue to provide advantages in military, industrial, and political operations. Innovations and advancements in medical and genetic research can be turned into biological weapons, planning and logistics repurposed for targeting, elections manipulated.
