10 Unexpected Perks of Being A Mum

We all love our kids more than life itself; they are miraculous little beings that bring so much joy into our lives and ultimately, make us better people. Being a parent is also one of the biggest challenges we will ever face, we have to make a lot of sacrifices and learn to function on minimal sleep. Some day’s the stresses of being a parent can bring you to tears but, between the exploding nappies, the tantrums and the sleepless nights there are also many unexpected perks!

This actually begins before you pop the little munchkin out. Pregnancy and kids are perfectly acceptable excuses for avoiding event’s that make you want to stick pins in your eyes.

If you have morning sickness, the babysitter has cancelled, your little darling is under the weather, or you’ve been up all night with a teething toddler you just aren’t going to be able to make it to, unfortunately.

I am not advocating being late all the time, but once you have kids, when you are late, you can just blame it on them. Most of the time, it is a genuine excuse as trying to get out of the house on time with little ones is no mean feat. But when it is your fault, you can still blame it on them. Poor little blighters, they get the blame for everything!

Shopping with kids can be a nightmare, so having a dedicated spot right in front of the shop doors makes life so much easier.

The look in their eyes and the expression of wonder and joy on their little faces when they discover something new or figure something out that they’ve been trying to understand for a long time is a complete picture. Children help you to appreciate the beauty and joy in the smallest of things.

Have you ever noticed that the people you love to be around most are the people who make you laugh?

The stresses and strains of being an adult can result in many of us getting bogged down in the everyday. Life is tough, and when we are preoccupied with all the serious stuff like earning money and paying bills, we can forget to have fun. We all need more laughter in our lives, and one amazing thing about children is they ensure laughter is a part of our everyday. From falling asleep in their dinner to the face they pull when they are having a poop and giggling at entirely random things like the sound of tinfoil when you crinkle it — the laughs are endless!

Those big cotton knickers that you love so much when you were pregnant? They aren’t going anywhere. High wasted briefs over thongs any day ha!

Babies are so cuddly, in those first weeks all your time is spent snuggling your little one, breathing in their heavenly smell and never wanting to let them go — its bliss! Then there are the toddler cuddles, they are the best! When they run up to you and wrap their little arms around your neck and squeeze you tight, there’s nothing else like it. And when they start to say love you mummy, there are no words to describe just how amazing it feels!

When unexpected visitors call, and your house looks like a bomb has hit it. It’s perfectly okay because ‘the kids did it’ ha!

When you have little ones, you can watch Disney films and Mrs Doubtfire as much as you like. It’s also perfectly acceptable to watch Tom Hardy reading the CBeebies bedtime story every night on catchup if you so wish. Kids just love the soothing sound of Tom’s voice ahhhh.

Having children is one of the most humbling experiences we will ever go through. Until we have children, we are used to looking after number one, when they arrive, they turn our world upside down. We are no longer our top priority — they are. We would literally give our life in return for theirs.

Having children makes us want to be better people, we want to set the best example to them and help them grow up into happy, confident, kind and well-rounded individuals. Children bring out the best in us.
