We Are Magical Beings

In the eye of the beholder there are worlds.

Something is waiting to be conjured every time I start to create something out of paint or words. My wife makes magic with objects, somehow setting the stage for an atmosphere of enchantment, beauty and refuge. It comes naturally from an instinct, a talent for a certain paradigm, a certain language.

When I write I often don’t know where I’m going until I arrive. There seems to be an initial attraction and then a kind of following breadcrumbs through the forest until, cresting a hill, I see the destination right in front of me. It’s not clear to me the details of what I even think of something until the sentences come out through my fingers.

That’s a kind of magic, it seems to me.

I look more intelligent on paper than in the flesh — that’s a nice piece of magic, too.

There are many kinds of magic. Beauty is magic, nature is magic, love is magical. There is cheap magic and profound magic. There is everyday magic and once-in-a-lifetime magic. Our lives are supported by forces that are both forceful and ephemeral. We don’t know where we come from. We only know we’re here.

That’s magical.

Physics and the story of Schrodinger’s cat comes down to magic, apparently. The whole foundation of the universe looks to be magical. Quantum mechanics is inexplicable within our rational belief system. Something else is going on even if you don’t believe “God plays dice with the universe.”

Magic. What else?

Maybe we are magical beings trying not to be.

Stripping the world of beauty, making everything functional and efficient, deprives us of basic soul nourishment.

We are diminished beings if we have to live without beauty, magic and a great sense of meaning in being alive.
