The pain of reflection vs the pain without reflection

Now that I’m in the midst of being assessed, it has been lesson plans and lessons day-after-day.

Lessons have been a mixed bag — with some going well and others going badly for various reasons. It has often felt like a sprint without much time to catch my breath.

In the frenzy, it often seems difficult to spare the time to dissect my lesson plans and reflect on what I had done. Ideally, I’d like to be able to analyse each and every component of my lesson plans in detail to gain the most benefit.

But when I’m unable to do that, then I get frustrated and end up procrastinating my reflections on my lessons, with the common refrain being — “I’ll do it all when I have time”.

The truth of the matter is, time never seems to be enough.

Time has to be carved out.

At the same time, fixating on the perfect will leave me with no data to work with. Better to have some points down, then none at all.

For in the words of Ray Dalio:

Without any reflection, I will only be left with the pain of my setbacks and stumbling. No progress.

And that is not a situation I, nor any teacher would want to find themselves in.

The habit of reflecting on my lessons is something that I’ll have to build up over time.

A good place to start with, with regard to my lessons, will be to zoom in on one main part that did not go well and reflect on it.

Perhaps, something that could fit on a 3" x 3" Post-It.

The first step on the path, is to get on the path.

One pain point at a time.
