How sports can fix racism

We all know this far too often story. Young kid with lots of potential in life is gunned down by either a rival gang or police officers. The has happened countless times in the past few years, and it needs to stop. Now this piece is not going to be anti-cop. They do their best to protect the public and keep us safe, and yes the do sometimes make mistakes. Instead this piece is going to look at how to prevent that tragic event from even becoming possible, through an increase in youth sports in the inner-cities and low income areas.

To start, we are going to go over why sports are important for all children, not just troubled ones. Sports provide kids with plenty of physical activity to help their bones and muscles to grow strong. They get to make friends and learn what it means to be a teammate, something that will help them when they have jobs. They learn important life lessons like hard work pays off, you get out what you put in, be humble, and many more. Kids can become dedicated to a single sport and if they are good enough they can play either semi-professionally or professionally. As the rest of this piece is going to go into deeper, sports are also great for helping to prevent crime in minors and young adults. This is because sports and gangs offer very similar experiences. When 30 former gang members who had committed violent crimes were asked why the joined the gang in the first place they all said the same thing. They wanted a sense of belonging and excitement for their boring lives. So they turned to gangs. Now if their had been sport programs in their area, they wouldn't have joined the gang meaning that they wouldn't have committed that violent crime.

In a study conducted in many countries, (America, Canada, Australia, and the UK to name a few), it was concluded that sports do help reduce crime among minors and young adults. Some statistics from this data are in Kansas City a late night and midnight basketball league was created, which cut the crime rate in young adults by anywhere from one-third to two-thirds. A decrease in crime by 33% to 67% just from adding a sport league is very promising for all areas struggling with crime. In Bristol, England, a multi-sport program was put on for possible offenders and re-offenders. This event managed to decrease the crime rate by 43% from what it was a year before. Imagine if crimes in your area that are committed by minors and young adults could be nearly cut in half by just by make a sport league. In Alexandrea, Virginia, there was a decrease in crime among young women who participated in a running event compared to those who did not participate in the event. This event is big because it address that young women commit crimes too, and helps them.

Imagine if the cities that are devastated by crime were to implement just a few sport leagues, how many lives could be saved. As mentioned above, kids join gangs because their regular life is boring and they desire a sense of belonging. If more sport leagues are made these kids won’t feel forced into gang culture for belonging and excitement. This would help decrease crime, which means less homicides. For every homicide, there is more than just one victim. The victim, the victims family, and the culprits family are all changed forever because of a single action. By the squeeze of a single family, tens if not hundreds of people are affected forever. Let’s stop this heart break that far too many families have to go through. Let’s save lives, one city at a time. Let’s stop pointing finger at the opposite political party or race, and focus on stopping the problem. Let’s create a better environment for not only ourselves, but also our children and their children. Let’s create some sport leagues to help protect and help the troubled youth.
