nobody taught this little girl the danger of prophecies

she never learned not to believe the girl with the bubblegum lips

when she said I’ve seen the rest of your life, and it looks like me

she never learned to love cautiously or with anything less than abandon

nobody taught this little girl that those men aren’t supposed to touch her like that

that she shouldn’t feel like that, so scared, all the time

nobody taught this little girl that fear could come from darker places than night

that growing up would mean the power to make herself recognizable

that prophecies don’t always mean happiness and prophets don’t always know just how to read

nobody told this little girl hiding behind my face that there was no lifetime of answers to teach her, and no time to teach them before she’d learn them herself

nobody could save this little girl from the world
