A glimpse at some of the cases that went to trial in the Dallas County Criminal District Attorney’s Office

FELONY

State v. Emmanuel Martinez

Capital Murder: Robbery

The Defendant and his Co-Defendant entered a Garland convenience store wearing masks and gloves. They were armed with handguns and proceeded to commit an aggravated robbery. They held one store clerk at gunpoint and then proceeded to go into the back office where there was another store clerk. As soon as they entered the office the Co-Defendant opened fire, killing the store clerk.

Guilty of Capital Murder and sentenced to life in prison

State v. LC Skinner

Intoxication Manslaughter & 4 Intoxication Assaults

On April 13, 2019, around 2 am, the Defendant was traveling the wrong direction on the Dallas South Tollway when he struck two vehicles. The driver of the first vehicle, a white cab, did not sustain any major injuries. There were 5 occupants in the second vehicle that was struck. One of the passengers in this car, Shelbi Stephens, died at the scene as a result of the crash. The four remaining victims all sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of this incident. After an investigation, it was determined the defendant had a BAC of .23. The Defendant, and surviving victims, were all treated at the hospital following the crash. The victims continue to suffer from varying degrees of physical, mental and emotional trauma.

Open Plea. The judge gave defendant 5 years in the Texas Department of Corrections for intoxication manslaughter and 5/10 probation on the 4 intoxication assaults.

State v. Cameron Mills

Murder

Mills met the CW in Richardson after communicating on Grindr. CW got into Mills’ car where an altercation ensued. The CW was shot once in the back of the head, falling out of the vehicle. The defendant claimed that the shooting was an accident and that it was self-defense during his testimony.

Found guilty on lesser included offense of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.

State v. Edgar Cortez Cardenas

Murder

18-year-old girl shot and killed in her vehicle in a park, dozens of casings recovered, no leads on shooters. Three hours later there was a drive-by shooting in another part of town. The shooters were detained, and guns were found in possession of shooters. Cell phone records put Cortez Cardenas and co-defendant Oscar Reyes at the scene of the murder at the time of the murder.

Guilty and sentenced to 30 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.

State v. Gabriel Cobarubbias

2 Counts Aggravated Assault against a Public Servant

Evading Arrest

The incident happened on the night of June 28, 2020, when officers were dispatched to a shooting incident at a Garland convenience store. After refusing to comply with officers, Cobarrubias got into his vehicle and reversed, striking and dragging Lt. Green and hitting Officer Hanks, both of the Garland Police Department. Cobarubbias proceeded to speed through the streets of Garland, tossing two guns into the street, one of which landed in front of a house with children. Officers eventually located him in a nearby ditch where he refused to come out. K9 Diesel was deployed. Cobarrubias repeatedly kicked the K9 so much he was taken to the vet with lacerations on his head.

Guilty and sentenced to 40 years for the Aggravated Assault charges and 15 years for the Evading Arrest charge. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

State v. Michael Warner

Murder

The defendant had gone to a motel to meet the witness for purposes of prostitution. The witness became uncomfortable with the Defendant. She cried out that he was trying to rape her. Three of her friends who were nearby went to the door and started banging on it, trying to break it down. Eventually the door was opened and the Defendant came out. CW Francisco Munoz, along with two others, began to assault Defendant. Defendant pulled out a gun and shot CW. CW fell in between two cars in the parking lot. The other two fled on foot. Defendant got up and started shooting at the other two as they fled, and shot the CW one more time as he lay paralyzed on the ground.

The Defendant was convicted of Murder. At punishment, the jury found Sudden Passion and sentenced the Defendant to 15 TDC.

State v. Paul Darby

Aggravated Sexual Assault of Child

The complainant’s father was a pastor of a church, and Paul Darby was a church member that stayed at the family’s home for a few months in 2011. The complainant was 8 years old at the time of the abuse [one time incident], and 16 years old at the time of outcry in 2018.

The jury returned a guilty verdict we agreed to 10 years in prison in exchange for his right to appeal.

State v. Ronnie Dugan

Agg Assault Deadly Weapon Family or Household Member Serious Bodily Injury (f1)

Neighbor called 911 reporting domestic violence. Officers arrived, knocked and had to wait over 2 minutes before Defendant answered the door. Complainant is in the hallway of the apartment crying out for help and defendant is telling officers nothing is wrong and that she had fallen. They then learn that the defendant had stabbed the complaining witness multiple times in the bathroom and she had to be taken to the hospital, where she was hospitalized for 3–4 days.

Guilty and sentenced to 25 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.

State v. Gerald Jackson

Sexual Assault of a Child

Defendant had sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s son from ages 13–17.

Guilty and sentenced to life

State v. Montez Ashby

Murder

This case took place in the Joppa community, the Defendant (Montez Ashby) and victim (Travis Crowder) were childhood friends who grew up in the community together. The Defendant provided PCP for both of them where things turned into an altercation. The defendant shot the victims 6 times.

Guilty and sentenced to 40 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.

State v. Walter Jacobs

Murder

Defendant and CW had an argument over a rumor regarding D and the Defendant shot the CW 6 times. Defense is claiming self-defense because he was in fear of our CW because our CW had been threatening him and been convicted of multiple murders.

Guilty and sentenced to 25 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.
