Should I Buy This Card?

There has been lots of hoopla and national attention in the trading card market these past twelve months. New money is flowing in every day. People are seeing what their friends and social media influencers post. They suddenly start to feel FOMO (Fear of missing out). I am here to tell you that you should put on the brakes. Before deploying capital regardless of how big or small, you MUST do the homework and research. You also need to be a bit of a skeptic. Ask the hard questions to yourself and others.

If everybody is piling into one player or one card, it may be wise to look away and keep that cash in your pocket for another day. You need to ask yourself if collectors or investors own the asset you are trying to acquire. Obviously both collectors and investors will own the asset and yes there is a blur between the two. However, if the majority of owners in the asset are investors, you need to steer the ship away from the deep sea and onto dryer land. Why? Collectors are the group of people you want to be owning the asset you are trying to acquire. They are die hard fans. They grew up with this player. They may not care if the asset goes down in value. They love the asset and they love the player. Investors are only in it for the quick flip. If the asset starts to head lower, they will quickly chase the market down to exit the position and in a quick flash, the asset will be down 50% before you can blink an eye. Caveat Emptor.
